5 Moving Tips for Moms on the Go

Moving your family into a new home (and juggling a thousand other things) can become a little unsettling—new neighbors, new surroundings, new friends, new “boogeymen under the bed.” But it doesn’t have to be. Here are four tips from the moving professionals at Molloy Bros. to help you and your family move into your new abode and make it quickly feel like home sweet home.

  1. Learn your new neighborhood. What better way to settle you and your family into your new surroundings then introducing yourself to neighbors before moving in? More than just making a good first impression, it’s a great way to get the inside scoop on your new surroundings: local spots for adults, as well as restaurants, playgrounds, shopping centers and locations you and your kids can enjoy. Plus, if any neighbors have kids, you can set up a play date to ease your child’s transition into their new surroundings.
  2. Have an “essentials” box. Nothing is more unsettling than not having one of your favorite items with you right when you want it. To prevent any meltdowns (yours and your family members), fill a box with your own essential items—and have each person carry his or her own box to ensure the first night in the new home is as normal as possible. These boxes may include (but not be limited to):
    • Clothing or footwear (e.g., gym clothes, PJs, sneakers, slippers)
    • Any prescription medication
    • Books
    • A journal
    • Favorite snacks
    • Stuffed animals
    • Jewelry
    • Hair or face products
    • Favorite pillow or blanket
    • Perfume
  3. Special services. We know you’re Super Mom, but sometimes, we all need a little assistance. Look for a moving company that offers special services, such as the settle-in service offered at Molloy They can help you with PC/network disassembly and set up, cleaning, appliance hookups, cable service and more, so you can check those items off your to-do list.
  4. Join a moms’ group. Online forums, social media groups and websites geared toward moms abound. You can do research and get feedback on just about anything in your new area from moms like you.
  5. Do a mood board. Have a vision before moving in of how you want to decorate, what color you want to paint the walls and where you want to put certain accessories? The sooner you can put your personal flair on your new home, the quicker you’ll feel settled in. Plus, your kids can get in on the fun. By letting them choose colors, fabrics and accessories, they’ll feel like this new home is theirs as much as it is yours—they’ll also start to get more excited for the move. We’re not saying you need to use these ideas, but hey, maybe cotton-candy pink is the new blue (at least where your daughter is concerned). A mood board can be created from a bulletin board or virtually through Pinterest.
