Moving day comes with lots of hustle and bustle, and it’s easy to forget a few details. As you pack, a way to stay more organized is to set aside a “first-night” box for your kids. Use this box to place essential items you don’t want to find yourself without on your first night in your new home.

1. Snacks and drinks

The last thing you want to worry about is filling hungry bellies when juggling all the details while transitioning to your new home. Having snacks and drinks on hand will help ensure your kids are comfortable and you have fewer distractions. Consider bringing:

  • Favorite non-perishable snacks, such as cereal and crackers.
  • Perishable snacks, such as cut-up apples and carrots pack in a small cooler.
  • Baby food if your little one isn’t fully transitioned to adult foods
  • Juice boxes
  • Formula or milk

Be sure to also tuck in a sippy cup, bottles, plate, washcloth, wipes, napkins, and utensils.

2. Diapers and wipes

A sufficient number of diapers and wipes are a must if you want to avoid making emergency dashes to the store. Pack extras, just in case. If your toddler has begun potty training, but sure to include pull-ups, extra sets of underwear, and the potty or child-sized portable seat to fit over your toilet.

3. Pajamas and clothing

Your child will sleep better with fresh clothing on their first night. Pack your child’s favorite pajamas, or perhaps surprise them with a new set of special PJs with their favorite characters for their first night in their new house. When packing clothing, be sure to include at least one set of clothing for the first morning. Also, pack an extra set of clothing in case of any accidents or food spills.

4. Bedtime needs

Children do much better when they sleep in familiar surroundings, and sometimes moving to a new house makes that challenging. Try to recreate a familiar setting by packing any comfort toys, “loveys,” and blankets they routinely sleep with. If your toddler sleeps in a crib and you won’t have it assembled yet, keep a portable crib in reach so you can safely put your child to sleep.

5. Toothbrush and toothpaste

As you’re packing other toiletries, be sure to include your toddler’s toothbrush and preferred toothpaste. This is one of the most common items people forget – even for themselves.

6. Entertainment items

During your move, adults are going to be pretty busy. While toddlers may want to help, there will be times they’ll need to be occupied for their safety. Reduce the stress of worrying about them getting underfoot and putting themselves in unsafe situations when moving heavy boxes and furniture by including several items to keep them entertained. At the same time, you work and keep an eye on them.

  • Coloring books and crayons
  • iPad, tablet, or laptop to watch movies
  • Any preferred toys (dolls, cars, etc.)

You also might want to present them with a “new house” gift that will keep busy hands occupied.
