Tips on the First Night in Your New Home

Be Prepared for Your First Night

New house; unfamiliar rooms; new noises—imagine how chaotic the first night in a new home can be. Not only for you but also on your entire family, including your small kids. Imagine sleepily stumbling to the new bathroom at midnight! Now bring in the presence of pets and the whole situation becomes even more hectic!

Tips On Moving So, why not try to make the entire situation a little bit easier on both yourself and family? Molloy created a list that will help you make your first night stress free.

  1. Have a separate well-labeled dinner box just for that first evening. Put all you will need for dinner in it and keep it in an easy-to-reach part of the room. Alternatively, you could just order pizza or take-out for that evening! (Don’t forget the food and water bowls for your pets!)
  2. Bathroom Right-Now Box: a separate box containing immediate essentials for bathroom use—toilet paper; towels; toothbrushes and toothpaste; shower curtain and rings; make-up bag; etc.
  3. Laundry Basket: (or other large box) to accommodate all the bed linens, blankets & pillows needed for your first night. With everybody very tired from carrying furniture, boxes and other stuff all day, the last thing you want to do is rummage through boxes looking for your bedding.  After a long day of moving you will be exhausted and won’t have to think about that.
  4. Have a special travel/make-up bag to keep any medicines. Imagine how hectic it can be searching the entire house, not sure which box has your Tylenol or drug prescription for that night. Keep that special bag either in your purse, diaper bag, duffel bag, or somewhere else easy to remember and reach.
  5. Ensure everybody’s pajamas for the first night (plus clothes for the next day) are secured in a suitcase or duffel bag; just as if you were packing to go out of town and stay away for a few days. You could also have another separate bag for your baby-diapers, spare clothes, wipes, a blanket, etc.
  6. Phone chargers, plus all other chargers that you may require, though cellphone chargers will be the most crucial on that first night.
  7. Lastly, if you are a coffee addict, ensure you are aware of the whereabouts of your coffee-maker first thing the next morning. Create a box to put in coffee and sugar; coffeemaker; filters and mug; etc. and label it clearly—makes your first morning in the new house MUCH more awesome.
  8. VERY LAST THING: Keep everything discussed above TOGETHER. It makes it easier to remember and grab as soon the truck is open for unloading in the new home.
